Susan worked as a freelance story gatherer for us in 2019. She traveled to VSO projects in Karamoja, Uganda and collected some impactful stories showing the challenges of educating girls in that region, as well as success stories of VSO interventions.
Susan was a pleasure to work with throughout the project. She got her head around a varied brief, asking insightful questions during the briefing process, and is an excellent communicator, staying in contact at regular intervals over WhatsApp while reporting in the field, which gave us control to input on urgent production decisions from thousands of miles away.
I would happily recommend her to other story managers and creative directors in the NGO sector.

I commissioned Susan to interview and write case studies of people affected by Cyclone Idai in Mozambique in November 2019 alongside a photographer. I was very pleased with the case studies which were well-written, detailed and contained plenty of direct quotes to bring to life the struggles people had faced in the aftermath of the cyclone. We used the case studies to create a range of materials for a well-received campaign to thank donors in the run up to Christmas.

Susan Martinez has worked alongside photographer, Peter Caton, on several assignments for CARE International in association with Lendwithcare, our microfinance initiative.
Both in South America and later in Africa the interviews and case studies developed by Susan about the impact of micro-loan were of the highest quality. The actual case studies that resulted were exactly what we needed and were very detailed. The field assignments Susan worked at involved liaising with both staff at CARE and our local partners.
